While it has become downright clich\u00e9 for a pirate to drink rum (they drank other stuff too, y\u2019know), I do have an affinity for the stuff.\u00a0 I\u2019d like to ruminate a bit about the first rum that made me really think about the drink, 10 Cane.<\/p>\n

The first thing that caught my eye was the name: 10 Cane, or as it is written on the label, 10CANE.\u00a0 Yup, I checked it out because it looked like \u2018Iocane,\u2019 as in \u2018Iocane Powder.\u2019\u00a0 I\u2019m almost certain that this connection wasn\u2019t intended, but then again my friends all thought of it before I said it, so maybe.<\/p>\n

What you smell is called 10 Cane Rum. It's much tastier than Iocane powder.<\/p><\/div>\n

At any rate, 10 Cane is actually named after sugar cane, and according to the website it takes ten stalks of sugar cane to make one bottle.\u00a0 10 Cane is made only with sugar, not molasses like brown rum.<\/p>\n

10 Cane is clear, with a hint of golden tan.\u00a0 It contains no additional flavors, which is something I love.\u00a0 I have this whole thing about clear rum versus brown or dark rums \u2013 it has been my experience that clear rum burns cleaner and doesn\u2019t leave a nasty hangover.\u00a0 Coincidentally, 10 Cane burns very clean \u2013 I\u2019ve never had a hangover as a result of it, despite having had about \u00be of a liter over the course of an evening.\u00a0 This is not to say it\u2019s not strong, because it is.\u00a0 It\u2019s 40 proof (80% alcohol, for you new drinkers), and smells and tastes of it, though it is smooth.\u00a0 This is absolutely not a rum for people who don\u2019t like the taste of rum.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not a fan of spiced rum \u2013 as I just said, this isn\u2019t a rum for people who don\u2019t like the taste of rum, but the inverse is also true: this IS a rum for people who DO like the taste of rum.\u00a0 I can\u2019t drink it straight, but it makes a nice grog (I use a 1:4 rum\/water ratio, with a little lime and\/or sugar).\u00a0 I also like it mixed with cola, especially Vanilla Coke or Dr. Pepper.\u00a0 When mixed with Mountain Dew Voltage, it\u2019s very sweet and caffeinated and blue.\u00a0 My friend calls it \u2018Romulan ale\u2019 on account of how it look like, well, Romulan ale.<\/p>\n

Captain\u2019s log, supplemental: I\u2019ve discovered that there is such a thing as Romulan ale, which is sold at some Star Trek place.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure why I didn\u2019t think someone had made it.<\/p>\n

10 Cane was the first rum I\u2019d tried that didn\u2019t have spices or flavoring in it, and I fell in love with it.\u00a0 I haven\u2019t found another rum yet that doesn\u2019t have something else in it \u2013 not that I don\u2019t enjoy the occasional belt of Captain Morgan or Sailor Jerry, mind you, but I like my rum to taste like, well, rum!\u00a0 And that\u2019s what a bottle of 10 Cane really is \u2013 it\u2019s a bottle of rum, and only rum.<\/p>\n
